According to officials, the male cheetahs Vayu and Agni were moved to a soft-release "boma" (enclosure) at the Kuno National Park (KNP) in the Sheopur region of Madhya Pradesh.
On Sunday, the ambitious cheetah reintroduction project reached its one-year milestone. Male cheetahs Gaurav and Shourya were also moved from the quarantine enclosure to the soft-release boma.
After finishing their health checks, Vayu and Agni were released in accordance with protocol on Monday. Both cheetahs are in good shape. Each of them has been in the quarantine boma since June 27. In front of senior officials, the team of veterinary officers successfully completed the release process, according to a statement made on Monday.
On September 17 of last year, eight Namibian cheetahs, five female and three male, were released into cages at KNP as part of the cheetah reintroduction initiative.
According to officials, 14 cheetahs and one cub are healthy, whereas nine cheetahs have died since March, including three cubs. In 1952, India proclaimed cheetahs extinct.
